Milford Regional's Expansion

Milford Regional's Latest Expansion

We are proud to tell you all about our brand new building and why we felt it was so important for us to embark on this enormous project.  Our top priority has always been and will continue to be caring for our patients and their families by providing top level care.  Fortunately, we already have a highly experienced staff; the new building makes room for the most advanced technologies and has created a more efficient and comfortable environment.  This project includes an expanded emergency department, intensive care unit, private patient rooms, a rooftop tranquility garden and additional, conveniently located parking.

Emergency Department

The demand for Milford Regional’s emergency services has been soaring – from 38,000 patients in 2000 to 56,000 last year.  Looking ahead, patient numbers in the ED are projected to rise to 70,000 as the local population continues to grow and the Baby Boomers age.  To fulfill the demand, we have increased the department from 30 to 52 beds and doubled its size to nearly 30,000 square feet.

Efficient and Flexible Rooms

The staff has developed a “rapid medical evaluation” area where patients with less severe problems like sore throats, coughs or sprained ankles are quickly seen during peak hours.  The new three-bed area reserved for simpler, quicker treatments can be quickly expanded to up to 10 beds when needed, but convert to other uses when not.

The new design has a much bigger waiting room, or waiting rooms — welcoming spaces that include a separate area for younger patients that looks and feels more like a pediatrician’s office. That waiting room directly connects to five treatment rooms just for children.

In the main care area, we have set aside eight beds for the growing number of patients coming in with mental health or substance abuse problems, with two more available as needed.

Finally, rooms offer family space to allow them to stay with their loved one. The ED has improved efficiency with its own diagnostic rooms for X-rays and other scans.  In addition, some rooms are fitted with special lifts and other features to accommodate the needs of heavier patients and give them a more dignified experience.

Experienced Emergency Department Staff

In the emergency department, all 22 physicians are board-certified in emergency medicine, with a specialist in pediatric care and three specializing in accidental poisonings and other toxicology cases. Unlike other emergency departments that rely on residents, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to cover the ED’s around-the-clock schedule, there is always an emergency medicine physician present in Milford Regional’s ED with up to five working the busiest shifts.

Milford Regional is one of the few hospitals in this region that can offer the expertise of Boston Children’s physicians when your child needs emergency care.  Boston Children’s physicians collaborate with Milford Regional’s emergency medicine physicians and nurses to ensure exceptional child-focused care.

Intensive Care Unit

While planning the new ICU, staff looked around the world for the best ideas and sought to create a department that would meet patient needs for the next several decades.

New, Larger Rooms

Milford Regional has become the first hospital in Massachusetts with this enhancement, part of an overall effort that has created one of the nicest ICUs in the state.

The expansion features larger rooms throughout to handle the very latest technologies, with separately enclosed bathrooms for each and lifts to accommodate heavier patients. A large part of space is reserved in each room for a “family zone” with a couch that converts to a bed, outlets to plug in a phone or computer and a place to hang coats. This new ICU changes the way families are involved in care, now recognized by the medical field as a key partner in patient recovery.

Good news for additional family members… they can gather in two expanded waiting rooms, each of which has furniture suitable for sleeping and movable partitions for private discussions or meetings with doctors, nurses or social workers.

Exceptional Critical Care Staff

Milford Regional boasts one of the few ICUs in the country with full-time intensivists (physicians who specialize in caring for patients in the ICU) holding board certifications in critical care medicine and another, relevant specialty — in their case, pulmonary disease. Not only do Milford Regional’s hold these certifications, but one of them is always on-hand during the day’s busiest hours — unlike other hospitals, where a physician is summoned but may not be immediately available.

Milford Regional’s intensivists treat ICU patients for serious conditions like heart attacks, strokes, respiratory failure and severe asthma, as well as rooftop garden for lightboxthose with chronic problems recovering from surgery.

Tranquility Rooftop Garden

Unlike any other hospital in the region, patients, family, visitors and staff will find a welcome respite with the uniquely designed open, rooftop patio and garden area adorned with plants, flowers, benches and tables; another area we can offer families for more privacy to talk or to simply get some fresh air and rejuvenate.

Private Patient Rooms

This expansion also includes a full floor of private patient rooms (24) which will allow the hospital to convert the remaining two- and four- patient rooms
to private rooms with private bathrooms.
