Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is a test that measures your blood pressure as you maintain your normal daily activity.  It uses a small digital blood pressure machine that is attached to a belt worn around your body which is connected to a cuff on your upper arm.

Getting Ready

  • No special preparation is necessary
  • Please arrive on time

What to Expect

You will be asked to approximate what time you think you will be going to bed and what time you will be awakening while wearing the cuff.  This will enable the technician to program the monitor to take your blood pressure every ½ hour while awake, and every hour while asleep.  Your arm will be sized for the appropriate cuff, which will be aligned above your artery.

You will be instructed on how to maintain your patient diary and what to do when the cuff inflates (keeping arm steady, level with your heart, sitting if possible).  You will need to be prepared to return the monitor within 24 hours, as it is scheduled every 24 hour interval.

This appointment will take about 20 minutes.

After the Test

You will be able to drive yourself home after this appointment. You can maintain your normal activity while wearing the monitor, except for taking a shower or going swimming. You cannot get the monitor wet.  You may not disconnect or stop the monitor while you are wearing it.  The physician who ordered the test will receive the results.  Check with your medical provider to find out when the results will be available to you.
