The Breast Center at Milford Regional Receives Grant

The Breast Center at Milford Regional Medical Center (MRMC) has received a $35,000 grant from The Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to support efforts with community partners to improve access to education, screening and care for Latina women in the surrounding community. The Breast Center is one of seven grant recipients in the state of Massachusetts this year.

A nationally accredited breast center, The Breast Center at MRMC provides diagnostics, treatment and follow-up on all issues regarding breast health and disease. It is also a valuable resource for physicians and is dedicated to patient and community education.

Beginning in the fall of 2010, with support from The Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, The Breast Center began a targeted approach to overcome barriers to care and provide screening mammograms for Latina women in Milford. In Milford alone, there are approximately 3,000 non-English-speaking immigrants from rural areas in Ecuador, El Salvador and Brazil. The Komen MA Affiliate Community Profile 2011-2013 includes an overview of the data demonstrating the disparities that exist in cancer care among Latinas in Massachusetts, noting that “while breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for White and Black women, it ranks first among Latina women in MA.” In addition, MRMC’s 2012 community health needs assessment identified a need to better coordinate outreach to residents in our service area who are not accessing basic preventive care and screenings because they are uninsured or underinsured, or facing cultural barriers.

“One of the primary issues facing the women we serve through this project is the lack of consistent access to a PCP which may also lead to gaps in scheduling an annual mammogram”, reports Kimberly Maurer RN, nurse navigator at Milford Regional’s Breast Center.

Working with community partners, The Breast Center has succeeded in expanding their reach to both Spanish and Portuguese-speaking women in the greater Milford area. The project combines education, enrollment in health insurance, and screening mammograms.
