July 2009: Milford Regional’s e-Newsletter

Spring

It’s summertime and thankfully the weather has improved since those rainy days in June. That means that many of us will increase our physical activity outside to enjoy the sunshine! We all know that there are many health benefits of exercise, so why don’t more people participate in regular exercise? Often it is simply difficult to motivate ourselves to get moving! In this edition of our e-Newsletter read about motivating ourselves to walk and the benefits of sunshine.

It is our hope that the information in this issue of Milford Regional’s e-Newsletter will help you maintain good health. We would love to hear from you, so please feel free to send us your comments or questions.

Steps Away to Becoming Physically Fit

Investing in a pedometer may be the answer to starting a regular exercise routine. Wearing a pedometer to measure the steps you take is sort of like using a scale to monitor your weight. You might be surprised at how many steps you take during the course of your day. A pedometer can help make walking fun. Read more.

Healthy Living Tip – Enjoy the Sunshine!

As long as you take precautions to prevent overexposure, sunshine is good for you. It supplies the body with vitamin D, which builds strong bones, it improves your disposition, and it feels good. Read more.

Q & A

question mark

Q: What is moderate intensity exercise?

A. Most health guidelines call for 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity exercise daily. But what constitutes “moderate intensity?” A study correlating exercise expenditure and walking speed on a treadmill concluded that moderate intensity is 100 steps or more a minute. That’s equivalent to walking a mile and a half in 30 minutes. That standard varies, of course, with fitness level. If you’re unable to go at that pace for 30 minutes, work up to it by aiming first to do one thousand steps in 10 minutes.
