Radiation treatment first became available in Milford with the opening of Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Milford Regional in January 2008. Cancer patients no longer need to travel long distances to receive the very best in radiation oncology services. A new linear accelerator provides targeted radiation or total body irradiation.
Radiation Oncology at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Milford Regional has recently been awarded accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The accreditation gives assurance that staff and equipment have passed the ACR’s rigorous evaluation. This accreditation should provide a high level of confidence for patients, referring physicians and managed care organizations that only the highest quality care is being provided to our patients.
According to the American Cancer Society, about half of all patients with cancer receive radiation therapy. Increasingly, more breast cancer patients are among those receiving this treatment. Radiation is used to shrink cancer before surgery, stop cancer from coming back, as well as treat the symptoms of advanced cancer. The Breast Center approach to cancer treatment results in better patient care in a variety of ways. Patients are given more information to make better decisions earlier in the process. It also spares patients unnecessary procedures because all members of the cancer team are in continual communication. Patient survival is positively impacted because the team is making decisions based upon specific patient needs.
