Emergency Department
Waiting in the Emergency Department to be seen can be the hardest part of your visit. Understanding why you have to wait may help reduce the stress of being there.
When patients come in to Milford Regional’s Emergency Department, they are triaged (assessed) to determine how ill they are. This ensures that patients who are most critical are seen first. During triage, a registered nurse performs a brief evaluation and determines if you need to be seen by a doctor immediately or if you can wait. What this means is that it’s possible patients who came in after you are seen before you. We do, however, do our best to see everyone quickly and efficiently.
Other reasons why you might have to wait in the Emergency Department may include:
- Development and interpretation of diagnostic imaging
- Completion and interpretation of lab tests
- Availability of a specialized treatment area
- Admittance or transfer to a hospital room or other healthcare facility
