Nothing can compare with having your baby here...Your baby will be one of a kind - as will your childbirth experience at Milford Regional. State-of-the-art medical equipment, highly skilled physicians along with our team of sensitive and caring nurses, are all dedicated to providing you and your infant with the best maternity care anywhere. Our maternity staff knows how important it is for you to feel as comfortable as possible through every step of your pregnancy, and for your family to feel they're part of the childbirth experience.
Every effort is made to make your experience in our Maternity Center the next best thing to being home. All 17 rooms in our Center are private, providing an inviting, comfortable atmosphere that will put you at ease. Each of these rooms is warmly decorated with oak furniture, television, telephone, private bath and shower, a comfortable easy chair for your birthing partner and ample space for all of your belongings. Our birthing beds adjust to a variety of positions to ensure maximum comfort during labor. Our Maternity Center also includes a specially designed operating room for mothers whose babies will be born by cesarean section.
We have always been on the cutting edge of innovations in maternity care. Milford Regional was the first hospital in Massachusetts to have LDRP rooms where mom can labor, deliver, recover and receive postpartum care in the same room. This past year, we added a new wing that houses seven private postpartum rooms. This quiet, peaceful area is ideal for moms with scheduled C-sections or those following delivery. In addition three rooms have been fully renovated to include whirlpool labor tubs. The warm, soothing jets of water in the tubs help our moms-to-be manage their labor better. In many cases, it reduces or eliminates the need for pain medication or epidurals.
What's more... each of our capable and caring maternity nurses is specially trained in interpreting fetal monitoring and certified in neo-natal resuscitation. With the PediTeam - a collaborative effort between Milford Regional and the UMass Memorial Department of Pediatrics, we have pediatric specialists on staff 24 hours a day to provide your baby with round-the-clock medical care if and when needed. Our association with UMass also provides additional support for high-risk situations.
We want you and your family to be fully assured that you will receive the most comprehensive maternity care available anywhere in the area when you deliver at Milford Regional Medical Center.
Preparing
and Planning for your BabyAt Milford Regional, you can be sure we're with you from the very first step. We want you to have both a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. That's why we offer a variety of Childbirth Education classes, provide pre-natal testing (i.e. non-stress, amniocenteses, ultrasonography or oxytocin-challenge testing) and offer assistance in choosing a pediatrician for your baby with our Physician Referral Service at (508) 473-6663 and our Provider Directory. (You can request a printed directory by sending your name, address and telephone number to mwrh@milreg.org).
Your obstetrician will instruct you to come to the Milford Regional Emergency Department. Once here, you will be registered and promptly directed to the Maternity Center. We encourage your partner to remain with you from admission through the birth of your baby. Any other special people may wait in our Family Room. If you are scheduled for a cesarean delivery, your doctor will give you instructions before your delivery date. From the moment you enter the doors of our hospital, specially trained maternity nurses will be assigned to care for you through all stages of labor and delivery. And when you and your baby go home, these same nurses are just a telephone call away to answer any questions you may have. Soon after you return home, one of our nurses will be in touch to check on the health and well-being of you and your baby.

Our spacious, new nursery accommodates 17 bassinets; an isolation room for newborns needing special attention; and a private breastfeeding suite for mom and baby. For those eager to see your newest arrival, there is a comfortable waiting room with a window view into the new nursery.
Recognizing the parent's need to remain close to their newborn, Milford Regional has added a room to provide overnight accommodations for parents when their baby requires a longer stay following mom's discharge.
Milford Regional has taken special measure to assure the safety of our youngest patients. Through a controlled triggering device, the doors to the Maternity Center lock and an alarm goes off when a baby nears any entrance or exit. The alarm is also triggered if the door is opened from the outside and the baby is carried out. The Maternity Center is locked down 24 hours a day; individuals must be "buzzed in" by the nurses' station.
Because the first moments after birth are so very important for bonding, your newborn baby will be wrapped in snuggly warm blankets and cradled in your arms as soon as possible. We encourage you to keep your infant with you as much as possible during your stay.
Your infant will be evaluated by a Milford Regional maternity nurse, who is certified in neonatal resuscitation. State law requires that your baby's eyes be treated with antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. An injection of Vitamin K is also given by the nurse to ensure initial clotting of your baby's blood. The state of Massachusetts also recommends vaccinating newborns against Hepatitis B; with your required consent we will vaccinate your infant after providing you with literature and information.
For security, matching identification bracelets are placed on mother and baby immediately after birth. Also, each Milford Regional maternity nurse wears distinctive security identification, which is discussed upon admission. Mothers are encouraged to insist that anyone handling their infant show this badge.
Soon after birth, your baby will have a complete examination by a staff pediatrician and a second exam prior to discharge. If your pediatrician is affiliated with Milford Regional, a maternity nurse will notify him or her soon after your baby is delivered. If your pediatrician is not affiliated with our hospital, an Milford Regional staff pediatrician will be assigned to care for your newborn during your hospital stay.
