Milford Regional Medical Center Sponsors
an Introduction to Medical Interpreting Skills Training

Milford Regional Medical Center will sponsor a 45-hour Introduction to Medical Interpreting Skills Training beginning September 8. Interested candidates must be proficient in English/Spanish and English/Portuguese. The cost of the training is $500.

Participants will learn effective medical communication tools so they can assist non-English-speaking patients and their healthcare providers. The course will provide practical skills for fundamental interpreting, effective communication for the patient/interpreter/provider relationship, professional ethics and basic medical terminology.  The lectures presented are designed to expand participants’ understanding of the American healthcare system while teaching the standards of practice developed by the International Medical Interpreters Association. Role playing scenarios in different clinical settings will convey the impact of cultural beliefs and practice in healthcare settings.

Classes will be held from 6 pm to 9 pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Medical Center. Orientation and Language Assessment will be held on August 30 from 9 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 7 pm in Conference Room C. Attendance at one of the sessions is required to be admitted to the program. Participants that successfully complete the course are then qualified to apply for employment at many healthcare organizations.
